Maketh Merry with the monks in the month of Maredsous

The Belgian Beer Company has decided to celebrate Maredsous in this month of September, maredsous_logohere, in the Mother City.  Why, you may ask?  Well …do we ever really need a reason to celebrate Belgium Beer brilliance? That would be a resounding: No.  But, it has now been over 140 years of meditative brewing mastery by the Maredsous Abbey monks to produce these 3, very distinctly original, Maredsous Beers.  An extremely just reason to highlight and appreciate the Maredsous Beers.

abbeymaredsous-abbey-church-2_511x768Maredsous is the name given to the Abbey Beers and the Benedictine Abbey that was founded in 1872 near Denée, in the Ardennes.

maredsous_breweryThe Maredsous beers are still brewed with the utmost devotion according to the original, closely-guarded secret recipes that are preserved in the Library in the Abbey. These beers represent the rich Benedictine tradition and are tied to the abbey, its past, and the values it represents – patience, devotion and hospitality.  All very applicable values for a beer brewing Abbey!  This patience is emphasised by the bottle refermentation that continues for 3 months before delivery of the beer commences.  The intricate coat of arms and trefoil of the Abbey also appear on the bottles and a substantial portion of the profits generated by Maredsous sales are donated to charitable causes.

Maredsous Brune was originally intended only to be savoured at Christmas, but, over the centuries, it was just no longer possible to keep this expresseive, dark and fruity ale under wraps for the rest of the year.  The Triple is elegant and sublime, and reserved for special occasions only in the Abbey.  It is a true connoisseurs beer.
